Going into my final year of a non-law degree I was confident that I wanted a career as City solicitor. Yet, I knew that in the long term whether I was happy at work would largely depend upon the firm’s culture and the type of people I would be working alongside. Unfortunately those are things that I found difficult to gauge simply by reading brochures and looking at websites. I applied for an A&O Open Day after meeting trainees and members of the graduate recruitment team at a Careers Fair. They were all so friendly and well informed that frankly it made me a little suspicious and I had to find out if they were too good be true. They weren’t.
On the day there were presentations explaining a bit more about the firm and the work that they do, a negotiation exercise, lunch with trainees and work shadowing in the afternoon. Getting a chance to talk to so many employees was definitely the best part of the day for me. Particularly as the trainees were all very candid about their experiences at the firm and offered some invaluable tips about the application process. The presentations were helpful because they highlighted the fact that although I came from a non-law background I had a very useful skill-set to offer the firm and I was able to ask the Graduate Recruitment team lots of questions.
During my interview some of the information I had gathered during the Open Day came up in conversation and helped to demonstrate that I was familiar with the firm and its goals. I would recommend attending an A&O Open Day because people already know it’s a great firm but attending an Open Day is a good way of finding out if it’s the right firm for you.
